Nutrition Program
Our nutrition program consists of feeds and forages that are safe and nutritious. These safe feeds we provide include:
Our Feeds
-
Brooks Omega Fibre Plus Concentrate Feed, made from stabilized rice bran, beet pulp and flax seed. Soaked before feeding.
-
Molasses-Free Beet Pulp is soaked hot and served warm. The horses love a warm meal in the winter.
-
Rolled oats, tailored for extra calories for a horse-in-need when working are pre-boiled and added to the daily concentrate. Oats are high in protein and do not ferment in the hindgut. *Feeds that ferment in the hindgut are main contributors to colic.
*Soaking feeds permits easier digestability and untilmately better absorption of nutrients (especially in relation to proteins) and added water in the digestive system is always better.
Our Forage
Hay is an important substitute during the winter months, but also necessary when stalling a horse. We encourage owners to provide a hay net. The goal with any horse is to feed little and often, a hay net helps maintain this natural foraging rythmn which their digestive system was built to operate on. It also keeps a horse psychologically happy in its stall. Reaserach has shown that chewing action in horses releases natural endorphins- the pleasure hormone.
Indoors we provide small squares and amounts are tailored to your horse's natural appetite. We don't skimp out on nutrition here.
In the pasture we provide round bales, placed on the round side, to keep rain out of the bale. Moisture inside a round bale can cause mold if horses are unable to consume it faster than it ferments. By placing the round bale on its rounded edge, only the outside of the bale may get wet, to which the horses can choose to discard it or not. Horses cannot discard the middle of a round bale when the bale starts to mold. By this time, the horses are already sick.
All of our hay is first cut, timothy/grass mix. There may be some alfalfa but the amount is minimal. Eating too much alfalfa can cause lowered red blood counts, colic and tying up and laminits. It is calorie dense causing horses who do not require the calories to become "hot", but if administered in small amounts is not harmful, but nutritious.
